Reorg of military intel

Defence intelligence is being beefed up as the UK comes under more threat from hostile states and terrorists.

A new organisation – the Military Intelligence Services (MIS) – has been set up in response to a growing number of cyber attacks, disinformation and disruption to satellites and shipping.

Based at Wyton in Cambridgeshire, the centre will see army specialists working alongside tri-service colleagues under one umbrella for the first time in a move aimed at speeding up how information is gathered, analysed and shared.

At the same site, a Defence Counter-Intelligence Unit has also been launched to boost MoD resilience, with officials admitting there has been a 50 per cent rise in incidents over the past year.

These include the targeting of personnel, tech programmes, supply chains and the wider defence industry.

The new set-up will also help protect the nuclear deterrent and infrastructure.
